Imogene is an unsuccessful New York writer. To attract the attention of her recently dumped boyfriend, the young woman stages a fake suicide attempt. But the simulation goes awry, and Imogene soon finds herself in the hospital, where doctors force her to rest with her family. She is thus forced to return to live in New Jersey with an eccentric family with whom she had severed all ties.
