As a child, Edith began singing with her father, himself an acrobat, during a performance. Her voice captivated the audience. For several years, she continued to sing in the streets of Montmartre to earn a living. Then she met Louis Leple, owner of a cabaret, who offered her the chance to sing in his establishment. He was also the one who gave her the nickname "La Mme." Edith thus began a long career spanning Paris and New York.
