In Brooklyn in 1986, Bernard and Joan Berkman are going through a serious crisis. Both are writers, and while Joan's career is booming, Bernard's is floundering. After yet another argument, they decide to separate, much to the dismay of their two teenage sons. The children quickly choose sides.
